San Joaquin County Office of Education

STEAM Fair 2020-2021

August 17, 2020

Dear San Joaquin County Schools,

San Joaquin County Office of Education (SJCOE) STEM Programs is committed to improving and enhancing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education. Part of that mission includes offering unique and innovative experiences and events designed to engage and excite students about STEM.

Unfortunately, the realities posed by the COVID-19 pandemic will impact what we will be able to offer this year. After carefully considering the guidance from state and local health officials, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) Fair.

Before making the decision to cancel the event, we considered options to hold a virtual competition. However, a STEAM fair is more than just the days that the projects are judged and given awards. It is the result of students working with teachers in classrooms over months. In this virtual learning environment, we recognize that it would be difficult for many students and teachers to adequately prepare for the competition.

This decision was difficult but necessary.  We understand how disappointing this decision may be to the students, families, and teachers who look forward to this event every year. We too look forward to the STEAM Fair.

For students who are interested in attempting to qualify for the California Science & Engineering State Fair, San Joaquin County residents are eligible to compete in the Sacramento STEM Regional Fair. While both this regional event and the state competition are still scheduled to take place at this time, it is unknown if that will still be the case in 2021.

While this year will be different, one thing that has not changed is our commitment to providing students with educational enrichment and unique opportunities to connect with their peers and the wider community in the celebration of STEM education. This event will return.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Sincerely, Lissa Gilmore

Each year San Joaquin County Office of Education (SJCOE) STEAM Fair awards thousands of dollars to students of San Joaquin County who exhibit superior levels of understanding and articulation in the area of science, engineering, technology and mathematics.

Our mission is to engage and inspire students to become interested in pursuing science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Top students with competitive projects proceed to the California State Science and Engineering Fair held each year in Los Angeles (6th - 12th grade)
